Cross Country is an excellent sport with both a team and individual component to competition! Athletes of every ability can participate, and runners learn valuable lessons about the pay offs that result from hard work as they see their times improve over the course of a season. Our cross country team is open to students in first grade through eighth grade. Practices begin in late July and the season runs through late October.
St. John School has several basketball teams that compete in the Lexington parochial basketball league. Teams are open to both boys and girls in fifth through eighth grade. Instruction focuses on development of fundamental skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Our goal is that everyone plays, all players improve, and that kids learn to play the game with honor and integrity. We also like to win! The basketball season runs from November through February.
The heart of St. John’s school spirit is our cheerleading squad! Open to girls and boys of all grade levels, our cheerleaders shine as they cheer on our basketball teams, perform at halftime, and whip up the student body at pep rallies! They’re truly leaders with an infectious enthusiasm! Cheerleading season runs from October through February.
Through partnerships with Lexington Catholic High School, Faith First and other recreational leagues, and instructional clinics, there are also opportunities to participate in soccer, football, bowling, track and field, wrestling, volleyball, and basketball (for ages younger than the parochial league teams).
Our wildly popular and tremendously successful Robotics Club is a STEM-lover’s dream! Students learn to design, build, and program robots in teams and then compete in task-driven regional competitions. In addition to learning valuable engineering skills, students gain life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, communication, collaboration, project management, and critical thinking. Third through fifth graders work with VEX IQ robots, and sixth through eighth use VEX EDR. The Robotics Club is active throughout the school year.
As an extension of our fantastic STREAM curriculum, this club offers the opportunity for students to engage in even more hands-on projects outside of the classroom! Open to all grade levels, each week students tackle a fun, educational new activity that lets them explore an aspect of science, math, or engineering! Problem solving skills and critical thinking are developed every week, but all the kids know is that they’re having the time of their lives!
Is your child a die-hard reader? Then St. John School’s Book Club is the place for them! Plot, themes, and characters take center stage as this club meets each week to discuss the latest chapters of their chosen book. This club engages students with books and stories that interest them, developing a love of literature and analytical skills that will continue to serve students throughout their educational experience!
Creative minds and talented hands are hard at work each week in our Art Club! Designed for students who crave more artistic stimulation, this club allows them to hone their skills and explore new techniques in a more individualized setting. Drawing, painting, sculpture—the sky’s the limit when it comes to your child’s creativity!
